Cartoon's Influences
Why are cartoon women often skinny? Why did I grow up watching Kim Possible or the Powerpuff Girls and see Ms. Bellum with her perfect body at such a young age?
Do you remember watching these tv shows and no not seeing the heads of some female characters or seeing the tiny waist they had? It is very likely that you didn’t take those features into consideration when watching Kim Possible or the Powerpuff Girls. But looking back now it's shocking.
Cartoon shows
In cartoon shows often women are often depicted as tall, small waist, skinny women but this isn’t the reality. This is a very important topic because children should be raised with the message that all women come in all shapes and colors and shows should display that and not what seems to be the ‘perfect' body. These shows expose children at such a young age and influence them subconsciously to believe that is what they should look like. Children who watch cartoon shows with what is perceived as the ‘perfect body’ women are determining their perception of what women should look like. No woman should look like something. Every person is UNIQUE and there is no ‘perfect' body.
Influence on the current generation
We need cartoons and shows to display this to the current generation to avoid comparisons to occur. These comparisons really affect one’s mental health and this should be avoided at all costs. Luckily this is a known topic and there are TV shows that don’t display the ‘perfect' body as skinny but that there is no ‘perfect' body and you should embrace yourself and love yourself. An example is the Netflix show “Orange is the New Black” or the Hulu show “The Mindy Project”. Take a look at different shows that embrace the women's body in any shape and color and love yourself!! EveryBODY’s Unique!!!
